George Skapars, 71, of Camillus, passed away Thursday, February 14, 2019 at home, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Germany, he moved to the Unites States as a young boy and has lived in Camillus for the past 25 years. George was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a bailiff at the Town of Camillus for over 15 years and a former Syracuse Police officer and Jamesville Corrections officer. George was a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, VFW and American Legion. An avid golfer, he also enjoyed spending time with family, especially his grandchildren.
George was predeceased by his parents, Stepans and Albine; and sister, Anna Ulrich.
Surviving are his wife, the former Madaline Nieciecki; children, George (Carin) of Weston, FL, Michelle (Jason) Powell of Liverpool and Mark (Heather) Lydon of Decatur, AR; sister, Mary (Richard) Sardano of Liverpool; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends may call Tuesday, February 19 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.
Services will be Wednesday, February 20 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. George will be laid to rest in Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to ALA 5th District VAVS, 104 Dolores Terrace North, N. Syracuse, NY 13212 for recreational therapy at the Syracuse VA Hospital.
