George Francis Vaikness, 82, of Camillus, passed away Friday at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center. He was a lifetime resident of Camillus and current resident of The Nottingham. A graduate of Eastwood High School, George was employed with Syracuse Typesetting Company for 35 years. He was a communicant of Holy Family Church and Blessed Sacrament. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was a member of the NRA and fan of Loyola Greyhounds lacrosse. George enjoyed spending time with his friends at Bosco's in Solvay and will always be remembered for his sense of humor and sharing a beer.
George was predeceased by his wife, Carol, in 2017.
Surviving are his daughters, Cheryl (Jim) Szkotak of Austin, TX and Bonnie (Tim) Mullane of Camillus; sons, David of San Francisco, CA and Stephen (Gengy) of Baltimore, MD; sister, Joy DiOrio of Middletown; brothers, Gerry (Kathy) of Chittenango and Jimmy (Marie) of Florida; grandchildren, Carol Hayes, Kyle (Gabriella) and Luke Mullane, Stephen and Kristen Szkotak, Joey, Omar, Timothy, Anna and Brigid Vaikness; and great-grandchildren, Christian, Nolan and Carly Richards, Joey and Isabela Ramirez.
The family would like to thank The Nottingham and Dr. Avni Patel for helping George keep his independence.
Relatives and friends may call Thursday, January 16 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.
Services will be Friday, January 17 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Warners.
George was dedicated to his wife during her battle with Alzheimer’s. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of CNY, 441 W. Kirkpatrick St., Syracuse, NY 13204.
