George C. Matteson, 91, of Camillus, passed away Sunday, April 14, 2013 at James Square Health & Rehabilitation Centre. Born in Utica on Wednesday, February 22, 1922, he was the son of William Seymour Matteson and Winifred Perkins Matteson. He was a graduate of Ithaca High School and Cornell with a degree in agricultural business. George was an Army veteran of both World War II, during which time he met his future wife, and the Korean War. After retiring from Allstate Insurance, he was a longtime volunteer at Meals on Wheels, Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Fairmount Community Church. He was also an active member of VFW and Camillus Historical Society. George was predeceased by his wife, the former Mary Brunner, on April 29, 2002; brother, Howard Matteson; and sisters, Anne Simmons and Olive Mack. Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, G. Scott and Diane Matteson of Midlothian, Virginia; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jo and Ken "Shawn" Shauinger of Pinetop, Arizona; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call Thursday, April 18 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 19 in Fairmount Community Church United Church of Christ with Rev. Gary E. Ferner officiating. George will be laid to rest in the Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Camillus Historical Society, 4600 W.
