Gary William Cook

May 14, 1946 — March 20, 2022

Gary W. Cook, 75, of Camillus, passed away Sunday, on the first day of spring, of stage 4 melanoma. He brought so much joy to everyone he met, sharing his genuine interest, smiles and hearty laugh that will be remembered by all who heard it. Gary was born May 14, 1946 in Binghamton, graduating in 1964 from Chenango Valley High School, Binghamton, NY and in 1968 from Union College, Schenectady. He was devoted to his wife, Ellie and his church family at Amboy Belle Isle United Church. Gary proudly earned his professional civil engineer’s license and retired as a bridge inspector from the NYSDOT. After Ellie died in 2019, he called his sister, Linda, every night at 8:30 sharp with the weather report and a recap of his day. Gary enjoyed fishing, hiking, ice racing in his first VW, and rugby. He took pride in maintaining his home and could be found doing household projects such as painting, constructing fences and steps. Above all, Gary loved spending time with family and friends.

He joins his wife of 36 years, Elaine “Ellie” Banks Cook; parents, Marion and Larry; brothers, Jack and Jim; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Surviving are his sister, Linda (Dan) DeVona; extended family members, Janet and Paul Huysman, Gail Banks, Ron and Sandy Banks and Beverly Cook; numerous nieces and nephews; close friends; as well as his four pampered cats.

A small memorial service and reception will be held at Amboy Belle Isle United Church, later this spring, where memories and stories of Gary can be shared.

If desired, kindly make memorial contributions in his name to Francis House, 108 Michaels Ave., Syracuse, NY 13208 where he received loving, hospice care or to his beloved, Amboy Belle Isle United Church, 6190 Airport Rd., Syracuse, NY 13209.
