Frederick W. Ummer, 81, of Syracuse, died Wednesday June 29, 2005 at Loretto in Syracuse, New York. Born in Providence, Rhode Island on Saturday, September 1, 1923, he was the son of Frederick William Ummer and Jean Flohrer. He was raised in New Jersey and lived in Syracuse since 1966 and in Ocala, Florida for five years. Fred was a graduate of Cranford High School in Cranford, New Jersey and Pace College in New York City. He was vice president of Dey Bros. in Syracuse, retiring in 1986 after 20 years. He also worked as store manager at several of the area Dey Bros., including Fairmount and Tri-County Mall in Baldwinsville. An Army veteran of World War II, he served from 1943-1946. With his wife, Margery, Fred was a member of the Central New York Orchid Society for many years. He was also an active member of the West Genesee United Methodist Church as well as churches in Florida. He took great pride in gardening and landscaping in his yards. Fred's wife, the former Margery Eva Thomas, died May 27,1996. Surviving are his daughter, Hollis (Jeff) Rotella of Syracuse; sons, Christopher Ummer of St. Johnsbury, Vermont and Tyler (Myra) Ummer of Lake Mary, Florida; sister, Elizabeth Giffert of Whiting, New Jersey; and grandchildren; Benjamin and Eden Rotella, Zachary and Alexandra Ummer. Services will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 20 at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus. Friends may call preceding the service from 3 to 5 p.m. Burial will be private.
