Frederick J. Smith

Frederick “Fred” J. Smith, 87, of Syracuse, passed away Sunday, March 22 at University Hospital. He was the son of the late Fred and Margaret Smith. He married his loving wife of 63 years, Mary Jane (DeSantis) on August 4, 1956. They spent most of their lives in Syracuse with the exception of nine years living in the Pittsburgh and Philadelphia areas where they raised five children. He attended Christian Brothers Academy and St. Vincent De Paul High Schools and earned his bachelor’s degree from Le Moyne College. He graduated Cum Laude and was president of the Industrial Relations Club. He entered the Army where he proudly served his country during the Korean War. Fred was employed with Smith Corona Corporation for over 25 years, retiring as the director of information systems. He was a former communicant of St. Ann's Church. An avid sports fan, Fred had a deep passion for SU sports and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was a member of the Orange Pack and Dave Bing Societies. Fred enjoyed golfing and traveling, especially to the South Jersey Shore. He devoted his life to his family and loved spending time with them.

Fred was predeceased by his daughter, Susan Williams; brother, William Smith; and sister, Margaret "Mickey" Huppman.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Jane; daughters, Lynne Smith of Clay, Beth (James) Bova of Lakewood Ranch, FL and Jennifer (Ron) Smith of Camillus; son, Fred (Katie) Smith of Saratoga Springs; grandchildren, Shane, Jenna, Stephanie (Egemen), Jimmy, Ronnie, Madison, Freddie, Susan, Sam and Maggie; great-grandchildren, Paige and Carter; and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours and services will be private at this time. A memorial Mass in Fred's name will be celebrated at a later date for family and friends.
