Our beloved mother and Baba, Eugenia, (Zhenia), passed away on Friday. Eugenia was born in Zhitomir, Ukraine, the second eldest of five children. At the end of World War II, she and her family were relocated to Stuttgart, Germany, where she met her future husband, Walter. During the time in Germany, Eugenia trained as a seamstress. She and Walter settled in Syracuse where they were married and raised their family. Over the next several years, Eugenia worked various jobs until the couple opened the Blue Ribbon Market, where she worked alongside her husband for 33 years.
Eugenia was an active member and past president of St. Olga’s Sisterhood of St. Luke’s. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking, embroidery and mostly spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Eugenia was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Walter; brother, Joseph Wertyschyn; and sister, Helen Luczkowycz.
Eugenia leaves behind her children, Lilli Rastegar, Julian Dmytryszyn, and Christina (Michael) Levchuck; grandsons, Nicholas and Daniel Rastegar and Walter and Peter Levchuck; brother, Walter (Orysia) Wertyschyn; and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends may call Monday, September 12 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus. Panakhyda service will be at 7 p.m.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, September 13 at 12:00 p.m. in St. Luke’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Eugenia will be laid to rest in St. Luke’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Luke’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 3290 Warners Rd., Warners, NY 13164.
