Elizabeth Socrates Steinberg, 73, of Camillus, passed away Sunday at Upstate University Hospital. Born and raised in Canandaigua, she made Syracuse her home in 1989. A proud 1968 graduate of Canandaigua Academy, Elizabeth went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism from Ohio University in 1972. She had a successful career as a sales representative, contributing over 20 years of dedicated service to Signal Technology Group, and previously represented Digital Equipment Corp.
Devoted to her faith, Elizabeth was a member of St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church, where she served as the Sunday School principal for more than 15 years. Her commitment extended beyond the church walls as she actively participated in communications for the annual Syracuse Greek Festival, contributing to the vibrant cultural tapestry of the community.
Elizabeth's passions were as diverse as her interests. A skilled guitarist and singer, she found joy in sharing her musical talents. Elizabeth’s love for exploring new places took her on many travels, and her inquisitive mind led her to study history in her spare time. A culinary enthusiast, she enjoyed cooking and gardening, adding warmth and flavor to the lives of those around her.
Not only an avid reader but also a strong activist, Elizabeth was unwavering in her commitment to causes she believed in. Her advocacy touched the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her, leaving an indelible mark on the community she served and loved.
Elizabeth Steinberg will be remembered for her kindness, passion, and vibrant spirit. May she rest in peace.
Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband of 38 years, Ralph; and parents, Socrates and Joanna Martys.
Surviving are her daughter, May (Raul Barcelona Alvarez) Steinberg of New Jersey; brother, Nicos (Janet Riordan) Martys of Maryland; nieces, Joanna and Lauren Martys; and many beloved cousins.
Relatives and friends may call Monday, January 22, from 10 to 11a.m. at St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church, 325 Waring Rd., Syracuse. A funeral service will follow at the church.
Elizabeth will be laid to rest in Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Syracuse.
