Edward Joseph Shanahan, 97, of Syracuse, passed away Friday at home. A lifetime resident of the Syracuse area, he was a 1943 graduate of Manlius High School and received a bachelor's degree from Syracuse University. A U.S. Army veteran, Edward was employed by Westhill Central School District as the supervisor of transportation for over 40 years, retiring in 2010. He also worked as the director at Shonnard Street Boys Club for over 20 years. A communicant of St. Joseph's Church, Edward was also a member of the Senior Olympics. He was a master woodworker and sports enthusiast, especially for golf, baseball, and basketball. Above all, he loved spending time with his family.
Edward was predeceased by his wife, Mary, in 1987; and parents, James and Katherine Shanahan.
Surviving are his children, Mary Eileen (Paul) Callaghan of Mexico, NY, Michael (DeeDee) Shanahan of Manlius, Patricia Shanahan of Skaneateles, Linda Galvin of Syracuse, James Shanahan of Baldwinsville, Katherine (Joe) Shanahan-Branagan of Syracuse, Daniel (Madeline) Shanahan of Camillus, and Kelly Shanahan of Burke; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Relatives and friends may call Saturday, May 6 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at St. Joseph's Church, 5600 W. Genesee St., Camillus. A funeral Mass will immediately follow in the church.
