Edward J. Shewchuk, 79, a lifelong resident of Syracuse, passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at home. He was a graduate of Vocational High School. A U.S. Navy veteran from 1952-1956, he served in the Korean War aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S Lake Champlain CVA-39 and later at the U.S. Naval Air Station Glynco in Brunswick, GA. He retired as a senior research technician and foreman of the power plant from Syracuse Research Laboratory, Allied Chemical, after 35 years. A lifelong communicant of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, Ed was secretary and past president of the Holy Name Society. He was founder and president of the Syracuse Ukrainian Young Men's Club and member of the Syracuse Ukrainian National Home, later becoming executive vice president. He was also a member of the Solvay-Geddes Veterans. He enjoyed his family and friends, gardening and gathering with many friends for coffee at the Fairmount McDonald's, sharing stories of the past and future. Ed was predeceased by his parents, John and Katherine Shewchuk. Surviving are his wife of 45 years, the former Carol Ann Kosakowski; sons, Brian of Marietta, GA and Jason (Colleen) of Warners; brother, Richard (Patricia) Shewchuk of Camillus; sister, Jane (Richard) Troch of Camillus; grandson, Keegan James Shewchuk of Warners; and a large, loving family. Relatives and friends may call Monday, January 6 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus with a Panakhyda service at 6 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, January 7 at 10 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church. Ed will be laid to rest in St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery.
