Edward J. O'Hara, 91, of Camillus, passed away Saturday, September 7, surrounded by his family. A lifetime resident of the Syracuse and Camillus areas, he graduated from Camillus High School in 1946 and Niagara University in 1950. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. An avid basketball player in high school, Ed’s team was selected as the first All-State Basketball Team of 1946 and the Section III Champs in 1945 and 1946. Ed’s 1945-1946 team was inducted into the Camillus/West Genesee Community Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. Ed was owner of O'Hara Agency, Inc. for 40 years, retiring in 1990. After retirement, he was a Camillus Walmart greeter for 12 years. A communicant of St. Joseph's Church, he served as a trustee. Ed also served three terms as a Camillus Town Board councilman, past commander of the VFW Post #8664, past president of the Maxwell Library Board and past president of Leesburg Homeowners. He was a member of Skaneateles Bank Advisory Committee, Camillus Elks Club, Lions Club and the Travelers Insurance Company Leadership Club.
Ed was predeceased by his devoted wife, Lucille, in 2011.
Surviving are his daughter, Eileen O'Hara of Camillus; sons, James (Gail) of Syracuse, William (Meghan Curry) of Camillus, Daniel (Sheila) of Rutland, VT, Timothy (Kristen) of Camillus, Michael (Louise) of Syracuse, Patrick (Robin) of Stamford, CT and John (Jennifer) of Camillus; 18 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Edward felt blessed to be surrounded by a very special family his whole life. Alice Shaw was a loving companion in God’s eyes. In Edward’s eyes, Alice was a loving wife.
Relatives and friends may call Friday, September 20 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, September 21 at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Camillus. Ed will be laid to rest in Maplewood Cemetery, Camillus.
