Dr. Mark Edward Schneider, 67, passed away at his home in Carrboro, NC on February 10th, 2021 after a long, courageous journey. His family was at his bedside. Born in Syracuse, NY, he was the son of the late John Edward Schneider and June Katherine (Sauve) Schneider.
Mark was a graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo, earning a doctorate in psychology. He devoted his professional life to working in a variety of mental health settings and was a consultant and private practitioner. He also worked as an adjunct professor teaching psychology and disaster mental health at SUNY Oneonta. Mark was the past founder of the Regional Conference on Autism and was a contributor for many years to the former Syracuse newspaper column, “On the Level."
Mark shared many gifts with his family and one of the most treasured was the gift of travel. He planned exciting expeditions with memories that will last a lifetime and stories that will be told over and over with love and laughter. His enthusiasm and adventurous energy was contagious. Mark was a seeker of the unknown and a water spirit. Throughout his life he went on scuba diving trips around the world, from the Great Barrier Reef to Mykonos.
Mark’s innate gentleness, compassion for others and love for his family will be cherished and always remembered.
Mark is the beloved husband of the former Judith A. Helmstetter whom he married on October 2, 1982. He is also survived by his son, Jeffrey Nathan Schneider (Nina Boutsikaris) of Hudson, NY; daughter, Monica Lynn Schneider of Burlington, VT; sister, Nancy Hurley of Alexandria, VA; brother, John Schneider of Fitchburg, MA; nephews, a niece and cousins.
Family and friends may join in a celebration of Mark's life at Greenlawn Cemetery, Warners, NY on Saturday, June 19th at 11 a.m.
