Donald “Don” Harry Bogert, age 84, of Warners, NY, passed away Friday at Upstate Community Hospital. His wife of 59 years, Mary Ellen (Carey), and their four children were by his side. Don’s spirits were lifted until the end, by the love and support of his large family and many friends.
Don was born on August 18, 1937, the eighth child of the late Harry Ervin and Hulda Esther (Chapin) of Stillwater, PA. He was raised on his family's farm. A 1956 graduate of Huntington Mills High School, Don earned his bachelor's degree in business education from Wilkes University in 1962 and master's degree in education from SU in 1966. He and Mary Ellen moved to Warners, NY, in 1969, their home ever since. He started his teaching career at Virgil Central School District, then as a business teacher at West Genesee High School for 29 years before retiring in 1993. He was CFO, board member and treasurer of Westar Federal Credit Union for more than 40 years. He was a member of the Waterloo Boys Tractor Club, the Arbor Day Foundation, the Audubon Society and New Columbus Alumni Association. An avid sports fan, he loved Syracuse Orange basketball, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Philadelphia Phillies. Above all, he loved to spend time with his family.
Don joins his parents and siblings in the Great Beyond: his mother, Hulda; father, Harry; brothers Leland (Arlene) Bogert, Stanley, D. Guy, and sister Elsie (William) Mack, and brothers-in-law Louis Harris and Byron Burgess.
Surviving are his wife, the former Mary Ellen Carey; daughters, Ruth (Ray) Franks of Rowlett, TX and Bonny (Christopher) Einstein of Cohoes, NY; sons, Harry of Warners, NY, and Don of Media, PA; sisters, Erma Harris of Dallas, PA, Florence Burgess of Benton, PA, Ruth (Kenneth) Johnson of Newark, DE and Rebecca (Edward) Wolfe of Newark, DE; brother, Ernest (Edna) of Media, PA; grandchildren, Shelly (Patrick) Morrow of Rowlett, TX, Ashley (Robert) Hicks of North Syracuse, NY, and Jack, Nathaniel and Joshua Einstein, all of New York; great-grandsons, Braydan and Dylan Morrow; sisters-in-law, Blanche Bogert and Judy Bogert, both of Orangeville, PA and Ruth Kemmerer of Exeter, PA; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Relatives and friends may call Monday, February 21 from 4 to 7 pm. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus, NY and Tuesday, February 22 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the McMichael Funeral Home, 4394 Red Rock Rd., Benton, PA.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, February 23 at 10 a.m. at the McMichael Funeral Home. Don will be laid to rest in New Columbus Cemetery, Stillwater, PA.
