Delores M. Sylvester Checkosky, 88, of Westvale, passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at home with her loving family by her side. Born in Akron, Ohio on Thursday, August 28, 1924, she was a lifetime resident of Syracuse. She was formerly employed by Rudolph Jewelers. Delores was a communicant of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and former communicant of St. Stephen's Church. She enjoyed bowling, golf and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Delores was predeceased by her husband, Leonard Checkosky; father, Frederick Sylvester; mother, Florence Walrath Sylvester; sister, Mary Harper Carmen; and brother, Jack Sylvester. Surviving are her children, Lynn (John) Carno of Syracuse, Carol (William) Balestra and Karen (Thomas) Edwards, both of Camillus, Dr. Christine (Adam Pack) Checkosky of Kirkville and Leonard “Lenny” Checkosky of Westvale; brothers, Frederick and Robert (JoAnne) Sylvester, both of Syracuse; brother-in-law, Milan (Betty) Checkosky of Camillus; eight grandchildren; three great-grandsons; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call Thursday, November 1 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus. Services will be Friday, November 2 at 12:45 p.m. at the funeral home and 1:30 p.m. at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus where Rev. Andrew E. Baranski will celebrate a funeral Mass. Delores will be laid to rest in the Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Golisano Children´s Hospital, c/o University Hospital, 750 E.
