Carolyn “Lindy” Struthers Black, 90, of Syracuse, passed away Sunday at Upstate University Hospital. She was born in 1933 to Mildred Morgan Struthers and Dr. Parke Hardy Struthers, a professor of biology at Syracuse University. Although a lifetime resident of the Syracuse area, Lindy also treasured her time spent on the family farm, Merriconn, in Nelson, NH. She graduated from Nottingham High School and received her bachelor's and master's degrees from Syracuse University. Lindy was a science teacher for over 20 years in the West Genesee Central School District. After retirement, she and her husband moved to Nelson, NH, where she was a beloved reverend at the Nelson Congregational Church from 1982 to 1991. Lindy was a gentle, family-oriented person who was creative and passionate about life. She had an amazing way of balancing her strong faith with her beliefs in the logic of science. The world has lost an incredible woman who brought calm to every situation and joy to all who were blessed to know her.
Lindy was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Alexander Black; brothers, Dr. Alfred Struthers, Parke Struthers Jr., John Struthers, and Robert Struthers; and sister, Jane Struthers Ward.
Surviving are her daughter, Sylvia (Karl) Dion of Gillette, PA; son, Richard Black of Huntsville, AL; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Alice Struthers of Nelson, NH; and many nieces and nephews.
