Betty J. Rising, of Camillus, passed away Monday at Elderwood at Liverpool. Born in Syracuse, she lived in Camillus since 1955. She retired after 19 years with the Upstate New York Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA). A woman of strong faith, Betty was a member of St. Michael's Lutheran Church where she accomplished many firsts: first female deacon and first female to serve on the council and as president of the council. She taught Sunday School and led Vacation Bible School for 40 years. Betty was a member and first president of Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church and was an active member of the Altar and Service Guilds. In addition, she was a Girl Scout Leader for 25 years and volunteered for the Red Cross.
Betty was predeceased by her husband, Edgar, in 1999.
Surviving are her daughters, Ann-Christine Reichert of Fort Mill, SC, and Kathleen Tice of Camillus; brother, Charles (Sherry) Ventura of Marcellus; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
There will be no calling hours.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 4 at 5 p.m. at St. Michael's Lutheran Church.
Betty will be laid to rest in Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Syracuse.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of St. Michael's Lutheran Church, 5108 W, Genesee St., Camillus, NY 13031.
