Betty Gibbons

Elizabeth "Betty" Gibbons, 86, of Camillus, left us Monday, October 26, 2015, to join the Lord, her husband, parents and grandson, J.J. Gibbons in heaven.  She was born on November 27, 1928 at her grandmother's home in Oswego. Betty was the daughter of Oscar and Alice Rickey.  She grew up in Spring Valley, Auburn and Albion.  She received her BA from Brockport State and master's degree from Syracuse University. Betty taught elementary school at Cato-Meridian, Kenmore, Wayne Central and Chittenango. While at Wayne Central, she fell in love with "the gym teacher", John Gibbons.  They were married in 1959.  Within a year Betty left teaching to raise her family.  Later, she served as the director of religious education at Our Lady of Lourdes in the Valley and St. Mary's in Jamesville.  After retiring, she became active in the Friends of the Octagon House. The family is grateful for the wonderful staff at Keepsake Village and Cottage 21 for their loving care of Betty. Surviving are her daughters, Mary (David) Raymond, Diane (Michael) Deveney and Janet (Christopher) Smyth; sons, Jack (Jeanne Gabris) Gibbons and James (Marie) Gibbons; brother, Charles (Ethel) Rickey; grandchildren, Benjamin and Nathan Raymond, Bridget and Timothy Deveney, and Shay Smyth. Relatives and friends may call Friday, October 30 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, Inc., 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, October 31 at 9 a.m. in Holy Family Church.  Betty will be laid to rest in Greenlawn Cemetery, Warners.
