Barbara Mumper Mercurio, 78, of Fairmount, passed away peacefully at home on Friday after a long and courageous battle with cancer, fighting until the very end like the warrior she was. Born on February 18, 1947, to James O. and Anne I. Mumper, she was a proud graduate of West Genesee High School, Class of 1964. Barb had a deep love for reconnecting with classmates and took great joy in organizing reunions every five years, with her final gathering being the 60th reunion in July 2024. She furthered her education at CCBI, earning a two-year degree in Secretarial and Business Law.
Barb was also a dedicated and longtime communicant of Holy Family Church, where she served in many capacities, including as a Confirmation teacher, Eucharistic minister, lector, and rectory cook for many years. Her faith was a guiding force in her life, and she found great joy in giving back to her church community.
Barb was a longtime partner in the estate sale business, Balu An Rede, and later built a successful career as a broker/real estate sales associate for 25 years.
Throughout her life, Barb embraced many roles—devoted mother, wife, grandmother, and dedicated legal secretary. She had a passion for cooking, always eager to create delicious meals and share her favorite recipes. Her warmth, determination, and generous spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Barb was predeceased by her first husband, Thomas Chigaridas; “son-in-law”, Bob Argiro; parents; and brother, James W. Mumper.
Surviving are her husband of 44 years, Anthony; children, Kari Chigaridas, Thomas (April) Chigaridas, and Patrick (Mary) Mercurio, all of whom took wonderful care of her during her illness; her wonderful grandchildren, Maura (Jordan), Meghan, and Shawn Henderson, Christopher (Bri), Kacen, and Kyler Chigaridas, and Rider and Dominick Mercurio; “sisters”, Laurie (Steve) Chigaridas Frass and Susan (Jim) Chigaridas Smith; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins from the Sabloski, Mumper-Farsaci, and Barrington families.
To celebrate Barb’s life, relatives and friends are invited to gather on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church, 127 Chapel Dr., Syracuse.
