Alice Virginia Hotchkiss Hidy

Alice Virginia Hotchkiss Hidy, 87, of Camillus, passed away Monday at Elderwood at Liverpool. She was a well-loved daughter, sister, friend, wife, mother, and grandmother, as well as quintessential elementary school teacher. 

Alice approached everything with passion, bravery, and kindness. Raised in Larchmont, she sailed, danced, skied, and laughed her way into adulthood. Alice studied at Syracuse University, following after her sister, Phyllis. She then moved to Camillus with her husband of 58 years, William Lee, to raise their family.

Alice taught her children, Henry Carl, Dorian Lynn, and Frank Brian, many valuable lessons: to do the right thing, be kind, sing songs to pass the time, apologize for only the things you were sorry for, and to find the loveliness in every experience. 

An elementary teacher for 30 years, Alice was employed by West Genesee Central School District for 24 years, retiring in 1997. A member of St. Luke's and St. Matthew’s Episcopal Churches, she was also a member of the Onondaga Yacht Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, Onondaga Teachers' Assn., and the NYSUT. 

Saddened by their loss while finding joy in their memories are her daughter, Dorian Lynn (Russ Aicher) of Saranac Lake; sons, Henry Carl (Mindi) of Sugarloaf Key, FL, and Frank Brian (Beckie) of Sennett; sister, Phyllis Schwartz of Camillus; and four grandchildren, Erin, Danae, Matt, and Mina.

Relatives and friends may call Saturday, May 6 from 9 to 11 a.m. in St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 904 Vine St., Liverpool. A memorial service will immediately follow.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Stonehedge Elementary School, 300 Sanderson Dr., Camillus, NY 13031, to help teachers purchase school supplies.
